Asaf Elia-Shalev

Senior Reporter, JTA

ashalev@jta.org

I am a senior reporter at the Jewish Telegraphic Agency, where I write investigative and enterprise stories on the Jewish world, with a focus on politics, philanthropy, religion, culture, and the evolving relationship between American Jews and Israel. I strive to combine rigorous reporting with storytelling that connects big-picture issues to real people’s lives.

Before joining JTA, I covered technology, energy, and the environment and other topics for a range of outlets. My work has appeared in The Atlantic, the Los Angeles Times and The Guardian. In 2024, I published my first book, “Israel’s Black Panthers: The Radicals Who Punctured a Nation’s Founding Myth” (UC Press). I’m skilled at public records research, data journalism, and narrative storytelling, and I’ve taught and mentored young journalists.

Outside of work, I enjoy cooking, climbing, hiking, and cycling, and spending time with my wife, two kids, and our community in Los Angeles.
